Celebrated on 12/30/2026
Falling Needles Family Fest Day originated from a quirky tradition in a small Oregon town where residents would gather to sweep up pine needles from the town square, turning a chore into a festive community bonding event. Today, it's celebrated with needle-themed games and the world's largest pine needle pile, which attracts over 10,000 visitors annually.
The holiday was first observed in 1987 in the town of Pineville, Oregon, after a particularly heavy pine needle fall blanketed the town square. Local resident Martha Greenleaf organized a community cleanup, and to make it enjoyable, she added music, food, and games. The event was such a success that the town council declared the first Saturday of November as Falling Needles Family Fest Day.
Over the years, the festival has grown from a small local cleanup to a major regional event. In 1995, the town introduced the "Needle Toss" competition, where participants throw pine needles into a target, and in 2005, the "Great Needle Sweep" race was added. Today, the celebration includes a parade, live music, and the crowning of the Needle King and Queen. The event now draws visitors from across the country and has inspired similar festivals in other states.
