Celebrated on 12/19/2026
National Wreaths Across America Day, observed annually on the second or third Saturday of December, coordinates the placement of over 2 million wreaths on veterans' graves at more than 2,100 locations across the U.S., including Arlington National Cemetery and at sea. The event began in 1992 when the Worcester Wreath Company donated 5,000 wreaths to Arlington, and it became a national day of remembrance in 2007.
National Wreaths Across America Day traces its roots to 1992 when Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company in Harrington, Maine, found himself with a surplus of wreaths. Remembering a childhood visit to Arlington National Cemetery, he arranged to have 5,000 wreaths placed on graves in the cemetery's older sections. This quiet act of gratitude went largely unnoticed until 2005, when a photo of the wreaths at Arlington went viral. The attention spurred the formation of Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit organization, and in 2007, the U.S. Congress designated the second or third Saturday of December as National Wreaths Across America Day.
Since its official establishment, the event has grown exponentially. In 2006, over 300 locations participated; by 2023, more than 2,100 locations across all 50 states, at sea, and abroad hold ceremonies. The day now includes a week-long "Veterans' Week" of events, starting with a convoy of wreaths from Maine to Arlington, and culminates in simultaneous wreath-laying ceremonies. Volunteers, including veterans, families, and community groups, place wreaths while reciting the veteran's name, ensuring each is honored individually. The organization's mission—"Remember, Honor, Teach"—is carried out through year-round programs and partnerships with schools and civic groups.
