Celebrated on 12/06/2026
Saint Nicholas Day, celebrated on December 6, honors the real-life 4th-century Greek bishop known for his secret gift-giving. This tradition evolved into the modern figure of Santa Claus, but in many European countries, children still leave out their shoes on the eve of December 5 to find them filled with treats and small gifts the next morning.
Saint Nicholas was a 4th-century Christian bishop in Myra (modern-day Turkey), known for his generosity and miracles. After his death on December 6, 343 AD, his reputation for secret gift-giving grew, and his feast day began to be celebrated in the Eastern Orthodox Church. By the Middle Ages, the tradition had spread across Europe, with Nicholas becoming the patron saint of children, sailors, and the poor.
During the Protestant Reformation, the veneration of saints was discouraged in some regions, but the gift-giving tradition survived, often merging with local folklore. In the Netherlands, Sinterklaas (a derivation of Saint Nicholas) became a central figure, and Dutch settlers brought this tradition to America, where it evolved into Santa Claus. Today, Saint Nicholas Day is celebrated in many European countries, with children receiving small gifts, chocolate coins, and oranges. In some cultures, the day also marks the start of the Christmas season.
