Celebrated on 11/01/2026
Gluten-free Diet Awareness Month was created to highlight the challenges faced by those with celiac disease, which affects about 1% of the global population. Interestingly, many people without celiac disease also adopt gluten-free diets, contributing to a multi-billion dollar industry.
Gluten-free Diet Awareness Month was established in 2011 by the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA), now known as Beyond Celiac. The goal was to educate the public about celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten, and to support the growing number of individuals adopting gluten-free diets for health reasons.
Since its inception, the month has grown from a small awareness campaign to a nationwide observance. Today, it is marked by educational events, social media campaigns, and gluten-free product promotions. Many restaurants and food companies participate by highlighting gluten-free options, and healthcare providers use the month to screen for celiac disease.
