Quick Fact

National Sports Day in India is celebrated on August 29, the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. The day was first observed in 2012 to honor his extraordinary contribution to Indian sports and to promote sports culture across the nation.

Origins and Establishment of National Sports Day

National Sports Day in India was established in 2012 by the Government of India to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand (29 August 1905), one of the greatest field hockey players of all time. Dhyan Chand led India to three Olympic gold medals (1928, 1932, 1936) and scored over 400 goals in his international career. The day was officially declared as National Sports Day to honor his legacy and to encourage mass participation in sports and physical activities.

Evolution and Modern Commemoration

Since its inception, National Sports Day has grown into a nationwide celebration. The President of India presents major sports awards such as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Awards, Dronacharya Awards, and Dhyan Chand Awards on this day. Schools, colleges, and sports organizations organize fun runs, sports competitions, and awareness campaigns to promote fitness and sporting spirit. In recent years, the government has used the day to launch initiatives like the Khelo India program, which aims to revive sports culture at the grassroots level.
