Celebrated on 09/24/2026
World Dense Breast Day was founded by Dr. Nancy M. Cappello, who discovered her own breast cancer was missed on mammograms due to dense tissue. The day aims to raise awareness that dense breast tissue can mask tumors on mammograms and increases cancer risk.
World Dense Breast Day was established in 2019 by Dr. Nancy M. Cappello, a breast cancer advocate and founder of Are You Dense, Inc. Dr. Cappello was diagnosed with advanced-stage breast cancer in 2003, despite having regular mammograms, because her dense breast tissue hid the tumor. Her experience led her to campaign for breast density notification laws and global awareness. The first World Dense Breast Day was observed on the last Wednesday of September, coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Since its inception, World Dense Breast Day has grown into a global movement, with healthcare organizations, advocacy groups, and individuals participating through educational events, social media campaigns, and free screening programs. The day emphasizes the importance of supplemental imaging (e.g., ultrasound or MRI) for women with dense breasts. In 2023, the FDA updated mammography reporting requirements to include breast density information, further aligning with the day's goals. Modern commemoration often includes webinars, hashtag campaigns (#WorldDenseBreastDay), and partnerships with radiology societies to promote early detection.
