Celebrated on 09/12/2026
Did you know that Medicare fraud costs taxpayers an estimated $60 billion annually? National Report Medicare Fraud Day was established to empower citizens to report suspicious activities, helping recover millions for the program.
National Report Medicare Fraud Day was first observed on June 27, 2019, spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in collaboration with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The initiative was launched to coincide with the annual National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association's (NHCAA) Fraud Prevention Month activities. The day was created to raise public awareness about the prevalence of Medicare fraud and to encourage individuals to report suspicious billing practices through the HHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) hotline and online portal.
Since its inception, National Report Medicare Fraud Day has grown into a nationwide campaign involving federal agencies, state Medicaid offices, and private health insurers. In 2021, the day was officially recognized by a congressional resolution, boosting its visibility. Modern celebrations include public service announcements, community workshops, and social media campaigns using the hashtag #ReportMedicareFraud. Many senior centers and healthcare facilities host informational sessions on how to identify and report fraud, while the OIG releases annual reports highlighting successful prosecutions and recovered funds.
