Celebrated on 09/01/2026
September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about suicide prevention and share resources. Did you know that the Suicide Prevention Lifeline (now 988) was launched in 2005 and has answered over 20 million calls?
National Suicide Prevention Month was first recognized in 2008, building on earlier efforts by the American Association of Suicidology and other organizations. The month was designated to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and promote resources for those affected by suicide. It was officially supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention.
Over the years, the month has expanded to include World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, which was established by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in 2003. Modern commemoration involves social media campaigns, educational events, fundraising walks, and the distribution of crisis hotline information. The shift to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in 2022 marked a major milestone in making help more accessible.
