Celebrated on 07/15/2026
Nearly 1,000 home fires each year are accidentally started by pets, making them a leading cause of fire incidents. National Pet Fire Safety Day was established to raise awareness and provide life-saving tips to pet owners.
National Pet Fire Safety Day was established in 2009 by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and ADT Security Services. The day was created to educate pet owners about the risks pets pose in home fires and to promote preventive measures. July 15 was chosen as the date to coincide with the peak of summer, when fire risks are higher due to increased use of grills, fireworks, and other heat sources.
Since its inception, National Pet Fire Safety Day has grown in recognition through social media campaigns, veterinary clinics, and fire departments. Modern celebrations include sharing pet fire safety tips, such as securing loose wires, using flameless candles, and placing pet alert window clings. Many organizations also host events offering free microchipping and emergency preparedness kits for pets.
