National Shark Awareness Day

Celebrated on 07/14/2026

Quick Fact

Sharks have been around for over 400 million years, predating dinosaurs. Some species, like the Greenland shark, can live for over 400 years, making them the longest-living vertebrates on Earth.

Origins and Establishment of National Shark Awareness Day

National Shark Awareness Day was created in 2015 by the Shark Research Institute (SRI) and other conservation groups to address the widespread fear and misunderstanding of sharks. The date, July 14, was chosen to coincide with the height of summer when beachgoers are most likely to encounter sharks, aiming to educate the public about their ecological importance and the threats they face.

Evolution and Modern Commemoration

Since its inception, National Shark Awareness Day has grown into a global event, with aquariums, marine institutes, and conservation organizations hosting educational programs, film screenings, and social media campaigns. Today, it focuses on dispelling myths, promoting shark conservation, and highlighting the critical role sharks play in maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems. The day also serves as a platform to advocate for stricter fishing regulations and the protection of shark habitats.

Facts & General Observations

  • An estimated 100 million sharks are killed each year, primarily for their fins, which are used in shark fin soup.
  • Sharks have a sixth sense: electroreception, allowing them to detect the electrical fields of prey.
  • Despite their fearsome reputation, only about 10 out of over 500 shark species are considered dangerous to humans, and unprovoked shark attacks result in an average of just 6 fatalities per year worldwide.
