National Day
World Population Day
Celebrated on 07/11/2026
Quick Fact
World Population Day, established by the United Nations in 1989, aims to raise awareness about population issues. The date July 11 was chosen to mark the approximate day in 1987 when the world population reached 5 billion. Today, the global population has surpassed 8 billion, highlighting the urgency of sustainable development.
Origins and Establishment of World Population Day
World Population Day was established by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989, following the interest generated by the Day of Five Billion on July 11, 1987. The day was created to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues, including their relations to the environment and development. The UN General Assembly officially recognized the day through resolution 45/216 in December 1990.
Evolution and Modern Commemoration
Since its inception, World Population Day has evolved to address emerging population challenges. Initially focused on family planning and reproductive health, the day now encompasses broader themes such as gender equality, poverty, maternal health, and human rights. Each year, the UN selects a specific theme, such as "Unleashing the power of gender equality" or "How to safeguard the health and rights of women and girls now." Celebrations include conferences, educational campaigns, media broadcasts, and community events worldwide, often coordinated by UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) and partner organizations.
