Benenson was inspired to take action after reading about two Portuguese students who had been sentenced to seven years in prison simply for raising a toast to freedom under the dictatorial regime of António de Oliveira Salazar. His article urged readers to write letters of protest to governments holding prisoners of conscience, starting the "Appeal for Amnesty 1961" campaign. The public response was massive, and within a year, the campaign evolved into a permanent international human rights organization.

Growth and Global Impact

Over the decades, Amnesty International has grown into a global movement of more than 10 million people in over 150 countries. The organization campaigns to free prisoners of conscience, secure justice for political prisoners, protect refugees, abolish the death penalty, and end torture and extrajudicial executions.

Amnesty's rigorous research and impartial reporting have made it a trusted authority on human rights violations worldwide. In 1977, the organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its campaign against torture, and in 1978, it received the United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights.
