Celebrated on 04/30/2026
International Jazz Day is celebrated on April 30, a date chosen by UNESCO in 2011 to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role in uniting people across the globe. The day features the All-Star Global Concert, which has been hosted in cities like Paris, New York, and Havana, and is streamed to millions worldwide.
International Jazz Day was designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 2011 to recognize jazz as a universal music that promotes peace, dialogue, and mutual understanding. The idea was championed by UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock, a legendary jazz pianist and composer. The first official celebration took place on April 30, 2012, with a flagship concert at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
The date was chosen to honor the end of the UNESCO General Conference and to align with the organization's mission to foster cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. Jazz, with its roots in African American communities and its history of blending diverse musical traditions, was seen as a powerful symbol of freedom, creativity, and cooperation.
Since its inception, International Jazz Day has grown into a global phenomenon. Each year, the celebration includes a headline All-Star Global Concert featuring dozens of renowned jazz musicians from around the world. The concert has been hosted in iconic cities such as Istanbul (2013), Osaka (2014), Paris (2015), Washington, D.C. (2016), Havana (2017), St. Petersburg (2018), Melbourne (2019), and New York (2020-2022). In 2023, the host city was again New York, with events at the United Nations and various venues.
Beyond the flagship concert, thousands of events are organized in over 190 countries, including performances, workshops, film screenings, and educational programs. The day is used to promote jazz as a tool for education, cross-cultural understanding, and social change. Schools, community centers, and cultural institutions participate, making it one of the most widely celebrated international music days.
