Celebrated on 04/25/2026
National DNA Day commemorates the completion of the Human Genome Project in April 2003 and the discovery of DNA's double helix structure in 1953. It is celebrated annually on April 25, and since 2003, the National Human Genome Research Institute has organized events to promote genomic literacy.
National DNA Day was first celebrated on April 25, 2003, to mark the 50th anniversary of James Watson and Francis Crick's publication of the DNA double helix structure in Nature, as well as the successful completion of the Human Genome Project. The day was officially recognized by a resolution in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, with Senator Orrin Hatch and Representative Louise Slaughter introducing the legislation. The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) took the lead in organizing educational activities.
Initially, National DNA Day focused on celebrating the achievements of genomics. Over time, it has evolved into a global event with participation from schools, museums, and research institutions. The NHGRI hosts an annual online event featuring lectures from leading scientists, and encourages students and teachers to engage in DNA-related activities. Social media campaigns like #DNADay have amplified public engagement. In recent years, the day has also highlighted ethical, legal, and social implications of genomic research.
