Celebrated on 04/16/2026
National Healthcare Decisions Day was founded in 2008 to encourage adults to complete advance directives. Studies show that only about one in three Americans has a living will, despite the fact that most people believe it's important to have one.
National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) was founded in 2008 by the nonprofit organization National Healthcare Decisions Day, in collaboration with the American Hospital Association and the American Bar Association. The initiative was spearheaded by Nathan Kottkamp, a healthcare attorney, who recognized the need for a nationwide campaign to educate and empower individuals to document their healthcare wishes. The first NHDD was observed on April 16, 2008, chosen to coincide with the start of National Healthcare Decisions Week.
Since its inception, NHDD has grown into a broad public awareness campaign involving hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, and community organizations. Initially focused on advance directives, the day now emphasizes the broader concept of advance care planning, which includes discussions with family and healthcare providers. Modern celebrations include free workshops, online webinars, and social media campaigns using the hashtag #NHDD. Many healthcare facilities offer on-site assistance to help individuals complete advance directive forms, and the day has expanded to include a week-long series of events.
