Celebrated on 04/11/2026
National Barbershop Quartet Day celebrates the uniquely American vocal harmony style known as barbershop music. Did you know that the first barbershop quartet was formed in the late 19th century by African American men in barbershops? Today, the Barbershop Harmony Society boasts over 20,000 members worldwide.
National Barbershop Quartet Day is celebrated annually on April 11. The date was chosen to honor the founding of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA), now known as the Barbershop Harmony Society, on April 11, 1938. The society was established by Owen C. Cash and Rupert I. Hall in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to preserve and promote the barbershop style of singing, which was declining in popularity. The first official celebration of National Barbershop Quartet Day is unclear, but it has been recognized by various organizations and enthusiasts to highlight the art form.
Over the decades, barbershop music has evolved from informal street corner performances to highly polished competitions. The Barbershop Harmony Society holds annual international conventions and contests, such as the International Barbershop Quartet Contest, which crowns the world champion quartet. Today, National Barbershop Quartet Day is celebrated by barbershop groups, schools, and community organizations through performances, workshops, and social media campaigns. Many quartets also participate in charity events and outreach programs to introduce new audiences to the genre.
