World Autism Awareness Day

Celebrated on 04/02/2026

Quick Fact

World Autism Awareness Day is celebrated annually on April 2nd, and was adopted by the United Nations in 2007. The day is marked by the "Light It Up Blue" campaign, where landmarks worldwide, including the Empire State Building and the Sydney Opera House, are illuminated in blue to show support for autism awareness.

Origins and Establishment of World Autism Awareness Day

World Autism Awareness Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly on December 18, 2007, through resolution 62/139. The resolution was proposed by the State of Qatar and co-sponsored by 50 other countries. The goal was to highlight the need to improve the quality of life of individuals with autism, so they can lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society. The first official celebration took place on April 2, 2008.

Evolution and Modern Commemoration

Since its inception, World Autism Awareness Day has grown into a global movement. The day is marked by various events, including conferences, workshops, and fundraising activities. The "Light It Up Blue" campaign, initiated by Autism Speaks in 2010, encourages people to wear blue and light up buildings in blue to show solidarity. In recent years, the focus has shifted from simply raising awareness to promoting acceptance and inclusion, with many organizations advocating for neurodiversity and the rights of autistic individuals.
