National Day

National Chia Day

Celebrated on 03/23/2026

Quick Fact

National Chia Day celebrates the tiny but mighty chia seed, which was a staple food for ancient Aztecs and Mayans. Despite its small size, a single ounce of chia seeds packs 11 grams of fiber and more omega-3s than salmon.

Origins and Establishment of National Chia Day

National Chia Day was established in 2013 by the Chia Seed Association (CSA) to promote the health benefits and culinary versatility of chia seeds. The date, November 7th, was chosen to coincide with the peak of the chia harvest in South America, where the seeds are primarily grown. The holiday was first recognized through a proclamation by the mayor of Los Angeles, California, where the CSA is headquartered.

Evolution and Modern Commemoration

Initially celebrated with small community events and health food store promotions, National Chia Day has grown into a nationwide observance. Social media campaigns using #NationalChiaDay encourage people to share chia-based recipes, from puddings to smoothies. In recent years, major health and wellness brands have sponsored events, and some schools incorporate chia seed education into nutrition classes. The day is now marked by cooking demonstrations, seed-spitting contests, and charity fundraisers for sustainable farming.

Facts & General Observations

  • Chia seeds contain 20% protein by weight, more than most grains and seeds.
  • The global chia seed market was valued at over $1.5 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow 7% annually.
  • Chia seeds can absorb up to 12 times their weight in water, forming a gel-like consistency used in vegan egg replacements.
