World Water Day

Celebrated on 03/22/2026

Quick Fact

World Water Day, held annually on March 22, focuses attention on the importance of freshwater. The first World Water Day was designated by the United Nations in 1993, and each year has a specific theme, such as 'Water for All' or 'Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible.'

Origins and Establishment of World Water Day World Water Day was first formally proposed in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/47/193 on December 22, 1992, declaring March 22 as World Water Day, to be observed starting in 1993. The day was established to raise awareness about the global water crisis and to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

Evolution and Modern Commemoration Since its inception, World Water Day has grown into a global event coordinated by UN-Water. Each year, a specific theme is chosen to highlight a particular aspect of water, such as water and sanitation, water scarcity, or water and climate change. Governments, NGOs, and communities worldwide organize events, campaigns, and educational activities. In 2015, the UN launched the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with Goal 6 specifically aiming to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030. World Water Day serves as a key platform to track progress and mobilize action towards this goal.

Facts & General Observations - 2.2 billion people worldwide lack access to safely managed drinking water services (WHO/UNICEF, 2019). - By 2025, half of the world's population will be living in water-stressed areas (UN). - Agriculture accounts for about 70% of global freshwater withdrawals, making it the largest water user (FAO).
