Celebrated on 03/20/2026
The International Day of Happiness was established by the United Nations in 2012, inspired by the small Himalayan nation of Bhutan, which famously measures Gross National Happiness instead of Gross Domestic Product. The day aims to recognize happiness as a fundamental human goal and calls for a more inclusive, equitable, and balanced approach to economic growth.
The International Day of Happiness was formally established by the United Nations General Assembly in Resolution 66/281 on July 12, 2012. The resolution was championed by Bhutan, a country that has famously prioritized Gross National Happiness (GNH) over Gross Domestic Product (GDP) since the 1970s. The concept of GNH, introduced by Bhutan's fourth king, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, emphasizes sustainable development, preservation of cultural values, conservation of the natural environment, and good governance. The UN resolution recognized that the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal and called for a more inclusive, equitable, and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples. The first official observance took place on March 20, 2013.
Since its inception, the International Day of Happiness has grown in scope and participation. Each year, the United Nations selects a theme to highlight different aspects of happiness and well-being. Past themes have included "Happier Together" (2021), focusing on community and connection during the COVID-19 pandemic, and "Keep Calm, Stay Wise, Be Kind" (2020). The day is celebrated globally through various events, including educational workshops, community gatherings, social media campaigns, and acts of kindness. The World Happiness Report, published annually by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, is often released around this day, ranking countries by happiness levels based on factors like income, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and absence of corruption. Many organizations and individuals use the day to promote mental health awareness, volunteerism, and sustainable practices that contribute to long-term well-being.
