National Pig Day

Celebrated on 03/01/2026

Quick Fact

National Pig Day, celebrated on March 1st, was created to honor the pig as one of humanity's most intelligent and useful domesticated animals. Pigs are surprisingly smart—they can learn tricks faster than dogs and even play video games using joysticks! This holiday also aims to promote pig adoption and appreciation.

Origins and Establishment of National Pig Day

National Pig Day was founded in 1972 by sisters Ellen Stanley, a teacher from Lubbock, Texas, and Mary Lynne Rave, a teacher from Beaufort, North Carolina. Their goal was to recognize the pig as a highly intelligent and valuable domestic animal, and to encourage people to treat pigs with respect. The holiday was officially listed in Chase's Calendar of Events in 1973.

Evolution and Modern Commemoration

Over time, National Pig Day has grown from a small observance into a widely recognized event celebrated across the United States. Zoos, farms, and animal sanctuaries often host special events featuring pig-themed activities, educational talks, and opportunities to interact with pigs. Many people celebrate by sharing pig facts on social media, donating to pig rescue organizations, or simply enjoying pig-related crafts and treats. The day also serves as a reminder of the importance of animal welfare.
