National Pancake Day was officially established by IHOP (International House of Pancakes) in 2006 as a way to give back to the community. However, the tradition of offering free pancakes dates back to the very first IHOP restaurant, which opened in 1958 in Toluca Lake, California. The founder, Al Lapin Jr., wanted to create a friendly, family-oriented atmosphere where customers could enjoy a free stack of pancakes on special occasions. The modern National Pancake Day was formalized as an annual charity event, with IHOP partnering with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals to raise funds for sick children.
Evolution and Modern Commemoration
Since its official launch in 2006, National Pancake Day has grown into a nationwide event, with IHOP locations across the United States and Canada participating. Initially, the event offered a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes, and customers were encouraged to donate to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Over time, the campaign expanded to include other charities, such as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Shriners Hospitals for Children. The event has evolved to include digital fundraising, social media campaigns, and limited-time pancake flavors. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, IHOP shifted to a "Take Free Pancakes Home" model, allowing customers to redeem a free stack via carryout or delivery.
