Celebrated on 02/13/2026
National No One Eats Alone Day was founded by the nonprofit organization Beyond Differences in 2010. The day encourages students to make new connections and combat social isolation in schools. It is observed on the second Friday of February each year.
National No One Eats Alone Day was created in 2010 by Beyond Differences, a nonprofit organization based in San Rafael, California. The initiative was inspired by the story of Lili Smith, a teenager who was born with a facial deformity and often ate lunch alone. After Lili passed away from medical complications, her family and community sought to prevent others from experiencing similar isolation. The first official celebration took place in 2012, with thousands of schools participating.
Since its inception, the holiday has grown significantly, with over 4,000 schools across all 50 states participating as of 2024. The day is marked by activities such as “Mix It Up” lunch tables, where students are encouraged to sit with new peers, and classroom discussions on inclusion. Beyond Differences provides free toolkits and resources to schools. The event has also expanded to include virtual participation, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and now includes a focus on mental health and anti-bullying efforts.
