Celebrated on 02/01/2026
Canned food lasts for years because the canning process seals food in an airtight container, preventing spoilage. The first canning method was invented in 1809 by French confectioner Nicolas Appert, who won a 12,000 franc prize for his innovation.
National Canned Food Month was established in the United States in February 1987 by the Canned Food Alliance, a partnership of the steel industry and can manufacturers. The goal was to promote the convenience, nutrition, and affordability of canned foods, which were often overshadowed by fresh and frozen options. February was chosen to coincide with peak winter demand for shelf-stable goods and to encourage stockpiling for emergencies.
Initially focused on trade and retail promotions, the month has evolved into a public awareness campaign emphasizing canned food's role in food security and disaster preparedness. Today, it is celebrated with social media campaigns, recipe contests, and food drives. Many organizations partner with food banks to highlight canned goods as a staple for donations, given their long shelf life and nutritional value.
