National Have Fun At Work Day, observed annually on the last Friday of January, was created to boost workplace morale and productivity. Studies show that employees who have fun at work are 12% more productive and report higher job satisfaction.
National Have Fun At Work Day was founded in 1996 by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) in collaboration with the employee engagement firm, The Fun Department. The holiday was created to address declining workplace morale and to promote the idea that incorporating fun into the workday can lead to increased creativity, collaboration, and retention. The date was chosen as the last Friday in January to break the winter blues and inject energy into a typically dreary month.
Since its inception, the holiday has evolved from simple office parties to include structured activities like team-building games, themed dress days, and wellness challenges. In the digital age, remote companies celebrate with virtual trivia, online dance breaks, and Slack-based scavenger hunts. Today, many organizations use the day to launch year-round fun initiatives, recognizing that regular moments of levity improve overall workplace culture. The holiday is now promoted by HR professionals and corporate wellness advocates as a catalyst for sustainable employee engagement.
