Did you know that more than 200 children under the age of 5 die each year from drowning in bathtubs? National Bath Safety Month aims to raise awareness about simple precautions like using non-slip mats and never leaving a child unattended in the bath.
National Bath Safety Month was established in 2001 by the National Safety Council (NSC) in partnership with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The initiative was launched in response to alarming statistics showing that bathtub-related injuries and drownings were a significant yet preventable cause of harm, especially among young children and the elderly. The goal was to dedicate a month each January to educate the public on safe bathing practices and reduce the number of accidents.
Over the years, National Bath Safety Month has evolved from a simple awareness campaign into a comprehensive educational effort. Initially focused on children, it now also addresses risks for seniors, such as falls and scalding. Modern commemoration includes social media campaigns, distribution of safety checklists by hospitals and community centers, and partnerships with bath product manufacturers to promote safety features like slip-resistant tubs and temperature controls. Many organizations also host workshops and webinars to teach caregivers and parents about proper supervision and bath preparation.
